9 Things To Think About if You Support The UK Law That Bans Handguns :

 

1. Gun Laws are pointless and ineffective -

It's clear that criminals who will ignore the laws against murder, robbery and rape will also ignore the laws against gun possession. Even with decades of empirical proof that gun laws don't work, anti-gun campaigners continue to support such pointless laws.

 

2. They leave law abiding citizens defenseless and at the mercy of criminals -

As the massive rise in armed crime in the UK shows, criminals ignore gun bans just like they ignore other laws (and that's what make them criminals). The law abiding citizens obey the law, and are now defenseless when a criminal attacks them in the street or breaks into their home.

 

3. They discriminate against women and deny them the means of self-defence -

Guns allow the 5′2″ woman to fend off a 6′5″ attacker. They allow the little old lady to defend herself as well. Banning firearms, especially when the ban is targeted at handguns in particular, has a disproportionate effect upon the members of our society who are less physically strong. As a simple matter of biology, most women are physically less strong then most men. This means that taking away �the great equalizer� from them puts these women at a disadvantage, relative to men. Now consider that a weapons possession charge is not going to deter someone who would face many years in prison if caught for robbery or murder, and you can see that firearms bans leave law abiding women defenseless, and their potential attackers armed.

 

4. They remove personal responsibility and blame inanimate objects -

Gun are inanimate objects that cannot do harm, absent the actions of a human being. That human can be a criminal, a negligent parent, an irresponsible gun owner, etc. Each of those issues is one of personal responsibility, and should be addressed by punishing the offender, not blaming the inanimate gun and other law abiding citizens.

 

5. Some people that support them have irrational fears -

Many people who have never owned a gun seem to have an irrational fear of them. It would seem to me that this irrational fear of guns comes from many sources, such as the negative portrayal of guns in the media, fear over the loud sounds guns can make, lack of personal experience with guns, etc. Taking a little time to go shooting for the first time can, and will, go a long way to overcoming such an irrational fear of guns.

 

6. They allow politicians to treat themselves better than they treat their citizens -

Many of the most anti-gun politicians will bend the law or introduce legal loopholes to suit themselves, keeping the gun rights for themselves. This in very hypocritical of them, as they will tell you that it's wrong and unacceptable to have guns for self defence, whilst all the time they are surrounded by armed police officers.

 

7. Most People Can't Be Trusted.

Most people can't be trusted, so we should have laws against the ownership of guns, which most people will abide by because they actually can be trusted.  In fact, there is no evidence whatsoever to support the belief that the average law-abiding citizen would commit murder because of a minor dispute or argument.

 

8. People Have No Self-Control.

Ordinary people in the presence of guns turn into slaughtering maniacs but revert back to decent, calm and respectable people when the weapon is removed. In fact,  there is no evidence to support this line of thinking. What passes for evidence is little more than an excuse for not trusting ordinary people with control over their own lives.

 

9. Gun's Don't Work Against Burglars.

An intruder will be completely incapacitated by oven spray or deodorant, but if shot with a .357 Magnum or a shotgun will get angry and kill you.
