The 1997 UK handgun ban has turned out to be a complete failure.

Banning guns hasn't made them harder to get, it's just created a huge underground market where gun ownership cannot be regulated or controlled.

That's why gun crime has increased greatly since the ban was imposed.

Passing more laws will never reduce Britain's crime, as criminals, by their very nature, don't obey laws.

In fact, increasing minimum sentences for crimes involving firearms will almost certainly result in an increase in gun-related violence and murders as a criminal carrying a gun will be far more likely to use the weapon to avoid a much longer jail term than he would have normally received.

Increasing the sentence for gun possession to more than 15 years (or the equivalent to a UK life sentence) would place the police at tremendous risk.

A gun-carrying criminal would have little to lose by using the weapon against a police officer, as they would face a long prison sentence regardless.

These are the reasons why imposing more laws for the criminals to ignore is an idea that will never work.

One thing is clear, we need to try a new and different approach to crime, as the current method is proving to be counter-productive.

Continuing along the current path will result in a very dangerous and completely disarmed country, where criminals rule the streets and good, decent people live in fear.

This idea of allowing law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms for self-defence purposes is controversial, but despite what the media want you to believe, it's proven to be very successful in reducing violent crime in the United States.

Given the rising rates of violent and gun-related crime in Britain in spite of the banning of handguns and other tools for self defence, all mentally stable, law-abiding citizens should be granted the right to own high calibre handguns, pump-action shotguns and high velocity rifles.

These people should also be able to carry handguns in public, and use them in defence of their lives, homes and loved ones.

You may be dismissive of this idea, in the belief that it'll make things much worse.

Criminals in the UK are free to attack people like a fox running through chickens, as there is no-one and nothing to stop them.

Good people will always be attacked and killed by criminals. This has been the way for hundreds of years and legislation alone will never prevent it.

What will help is arming the victims. This will make a criminals job much harder, and will turn robbery, assault or rape into very dangerous occupations.

It also evens up the odds, and gives good people a chance where otherwise they would have had none.

There are now 2 options for self-defence in Britain -  

1. Allow the police to protect you. You can call the police when attacked and pray that they will arrive on the scene within seconds, in order to save you. If you survive the attack you can then give them a statement from your hospital bed, and hope the attackers will be quickly arrested.

2. The second option is to fight back and reclaim our streets by arming ourselves and giving the criminals something to be worried about, such as a serious risk of injury or death if they attack. In this instance we would be able to defend ourselves effectively, whilst we wait for the police to attend. We would not be putting our lives in the hands of people who are unable, or unwilling, to protect us.

Armed citizens have a huge deterrent effect against crime, and many criminals in the USA admit that they fear an armed victim much more then the police.

The fear of encoutering a victim that can defend him or herself causes many criminals to reconsider committing robberies, rapes and murders as the risk towards them is just too great.

The truth is guns scare a lot of people here, but they're ideal for self-defence.

Huge decisions such as this should be based on a knowledge of the facts rather than a person's emotions.
